　　这部描写海盗生活的滑稽音乐剧是使后来在电影界大为有名、并获得奥斯卡奖的凯文·克莱恩成名的音乐剧。其实，这部音乐剧的历史远比大多数人以为的1981 年要早得多。事实上，它最早出现在百老汇上是1879年。但是1981年的重新制作无疑使这部剧获得重生。这部剧在于1981年1月8日在百老汇的俄瑞斯剧院（Uris Theatre）公演，一共演出了772场。在当年的托尼奖（Tony Awards）上拿到了三个奖项。而后，1983年由原班人马出演的电影也十分受到好评，而扮演海盗王的凯文·克莱恩由此登上电影之路，一发而不可收拾。因为《潘赞斯的海盗》剧情诙谐幽默，歌曲轻松流畅，（再有可能是作者已去世，版权的问题简单），很多地方都有小型或大型的表演。专为电视拍摄的录像也有几个。
